This can make comments and messages blur together and get confusing if you aren’t used to that kind of messaging. Not only that, all wording is formatted in rows, not in text bubbles. All wording is on one side of the screen, unlike a normal texting chat design (like discord) - while some might be used to this it can get seriously confusing, and there’s no way to personalize it to make it easier to read. It separates one-on-one conversations and group chat rooms into two different sections, so you’re constantly switching back and forth to check on everything.Ģ. The least user friendly invention since the square wheelġ. If you’re hoping to do more with it, you should look elsewhere for a more thoughtfully designed, and scalable, communication method. If you’re only using the phone app and only for chatting with a limited number of friends socially, which is clearly the use case they have decided to laser focus on, you’ll be fine with it.

The conversations are spaced relatively far apart and take up way too much screen real estate. The alphabetical sorting of conversations means hunting down the person you were just talking to.

It’s completely unwieldy with more than 20 active conversations.

I used Hangouts and now use Chat in a professional environment, for more casual short form comms, and it’s clear after 6 weeks of heavy use that Chat wasn’t designed for anything more than light usage. Google Chat is at its best on the mobile app, but if you’re using it regularly, across mobile and in the desktop chrome extension, you’ll quickly see the questionable choices made by the developers. Unfortunately, that’s about where the improvements end. That’s really nice and a feature we were hoping for coming from Hangouts. Google Chat added the ability to have rooms where specific topic threads can be created. This works, and it's better, but there's a lot more to do. TBH this is an improvement over Hangouts, but lets not forget how antiquated Hangouts was. And lets be honest thats about 150x faster. 4- On mobile I can't type out an emoji and have it pop up like on desktop. The Chat Webapp really is what we need here. Even the hangouts UI is set up better than this. I'm definitely looking at a stretched out iphone app. 1- No slide over or split screen (come on its 2021 here lets go) 2- App screen usage is abysmal. The desktop web app is soooo much better. but tbh this app is missing quite a bit to be set up for the iPad. So I'm going to start with my pros at the moment: 1- everything else seems to be mostly functional 2- all my chats and rooms are there and accessible 3- the app doesn't crash as far as I can tell. Which style do you prefer? Let us know the comments below. So I'd say that its an improvement over hangouts.

If you don’t already have the Hangouts Chrome Appa - note: app, not extension - you can grab it from the Chrome Web Store for free. It works on Chrome OS, Windows, Mac OS X and Linux.

If you already have the Hangouts Chrome App you should already have the update (open it and check, if not just be patient). To switch back to the chat bubbles mode simply repeat the steps listed above and click the ‘Enable transparent UI’ button.

While well received at the time, the ‘floating heads’ were only officially supported on Chrome OS and Windows only. Google introduced the Hangouts Chrome App last October with a Facebook Messenger style transparent ‘floating chat heads’ design, pictured below. The right side displays the active conversation plus settings and options when selected. Split into two columns, the left panel plays hosts to the contacts list, message history and calls (plus a floating action button for creating a new chat). The new designed bears more than a passing resemblance to the official Hangouts app on Android tablets and iPads, using a single-windowed mode and split-column layout to keep chats and contacts together. Google has updated the desktop Hangouts Chrome app with a brand new look.
